Wise Words

Note to self

This quote really resonated with me. Almost as deeply as a gut punch that takes your breath away. While I have been working to decrease my phone use, I still felt a tinge of guilt reading this quote. Why? The truth is there are days when my usage spikes. For me, I think it has more to do with procrastination masquerading as project research or “just a little break” as I like to tell myself. That’s when I notice that my research moves straight into distraction mode actually impeding my creativity. Perhaps these wise words came at the perfect time as a kind reminder. I am pretty sure that I will refer to them, again and again, to keep myself on track this year.

To say we are addicted to our phones is not merely to point out that we use them a lot. It signals a darker notion: that we use them to keep our own selves at bay. Because of our phones, we may find ourselves incapable of sitting alone in a room with our own thoughts floating freely in our own heads, daring to wander into the past and the future. Addiction sounds horrible. But it is a hard name for a normal inclination: a habit of running away from the joys and terrors of self-knowledge. – Alain De Botton
