A new day
My pearls are on. My husband, an immigrant and naturalized citizen under the Obama Administration, was at my side. We pulled our daughter away from zoom school to celebrate the occasion, this historic moment.
My half Latina saw Kamala Harris officially sworn in as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president; and Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court justice, administered the vice-presidential oath.
I am still in awe of the inaugural poet Amanda Gorman’s performance of her poem “The Hill We Climb.” The delivery was exquisite and soulful. Her future is bright and her words are so wise. Epic, in fact. I have her on repeat. An extraordinary moment for us all. In case you need to see it again.
Honestly, I was moved to tears today. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact emotion. Perhaps elation but maybe relief or even both. The outside world seems a little calmer and I feel hopeful again. My worries about the future are slowly melting away. It will take time for America to shed its snakeskin, but I am ready for the promise of tomorrow. My heart swells with pride. Today is special.
How are you feeling?
