A Walk and some Words to Live by

My family and I spent the weekend in Washington, D.C. for Father’s Day. My daughter has been slightly obsessed with learning more about Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Sonia Sotomayor, and The White House. It was a perfect opportunity to bring it all together for her through a real-time walking tour.

Excited to see the nation’s capital through her eyes, this weekend ended up being a meaningful experience for me too. In a time when I’d rather put a blanket over my head and ignore current events, I walked away inspired and hopeful. Perhaps it was just the reminder I needed to tune out the noise and feel connected to humanity once again.

Here are a few things that inspired me this weekend:

Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope.
Martin Luther King Jr.

The best way to predict your future is to create it.
Abraham Lincoln

I do know one thing about me: I don’t measure myself by others’ expectations or let others define my worth.
Sonia Sotomayor

Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg

We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to do’ list.
Michelle Obama

If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.
Barack Obama

What words inspire you these days, dear reader?
